To maximise the shelf life of essential oils, they should be stored in a dark blue or brown glass bottle with a close-fitting plastic screw cap. Avoid leaving them on a ledge or window sill in direct sunlight - it is much better to keep them in a box. Cool temperatures will prolong the life - imagine you are storing a very expensive bottle of red wine. Base notes last longer than middle notes which last longer than top notes. Storage is more of a problem for the 'amateur' aromatherapist as we do not achieve the same replacement rate as the professionals. We have to keep oils for years and hope for the best !
