Classification of Essential Oils

Glass Bowl

Essential oils can be classified according to the volatility of their scent, in a similar fashion to the perfume industry.

Imagine filling a room with the scent :- top notes typically last from a few hours to 1 day, middle notes a few days and base notes up to a week. Patchouli is a classic example of a base note - a week later and you can still smell it !

Moods

The type of note is often associated with a particular mental or emotional effect - or to induce a particular mood swing.

Top Notes

Stimulating and Uplifting

Middle Notes

General Body Tonics, Neutral Mood

Base Notes

Relaxing and Sedative
